I completed my PhD at the Laboratory for Physiology of the VU University Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Hereafter I went to burgundian Antwerp in Belgium to continue with a postdoctoral position at the Department of Human Physiology and Pathophysiology. I returned to vibrant Amsterdam for another postdoctoral position at the Laboratory for Physiology, and in 2006 became preclinical biomedical research scientist at the Department of Anesthesiology of the VU Medical Center. In 2010, I moved to New Zealand, the most scenic country in the world, to establish my own cardiovascular research group at the Department of Physiology of the University of Otago in Dunedin.

My research interests include how the autonomic regulation of cardiovascular function in diabetes and obesity is changed, with an emphasis on perioperative complications and translational aspect using human myocardium. I am co-founder of HeartOtago (www.heart.otago.ac.nz), which is comprised of cardiovascular researchers and clinicians located at the University of Otago and Dunedin Hospital, with the goal to expand upon traditional cell and animal models to better understand the molecular nature of cardiac disease in patients with heart disease and to translate the laboratory based cardiovascular research into the clinical setting.
