John Seddon is Head of the Chemical Physics Section and Deputy Head of the Chemistry Department at Imperial College London. After a B.Sc. in Physics and a PhD. in Biophysics he was awarded a EMBO Long Term Fellowship in 1980, which he held in the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen, Germany. He took up a Lectureship in Chemical Physics in the University of Southampton, England in 1983, moved to Imperial College London in 1991, and was promoted to Professor in 1999. He is particularly interested in phase separation, non-lamellar phases, and phase transitions of lipids, and their relationship to membrane microdomains, interfacial curvature and complex membrane geometries. He has pioneered studies of the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the structure and stability of lyotropic liquid-crystalline phases, and the kinetics and mechanisms of lyotropic phase transformations, using pressure-jump time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction.
