Anastasios Melis received his B.Sc. degree in Biology at the University of Athens, Greece, and the Ph.D. degree in molecular biophysics from the Florida State University, Tallahassee. He received postdoctoral training in Biophysics at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, The Netherlands, working under the auspices of the European Molecular Biology Organization and in Plant Biology under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University. He is currently a full Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, Faculty Biologist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).  Dr. Melis pioneered the concept of “Photosynthetic Biofuels”, in a photobiological process where fuel and chemicals emanate immediately from the primary products of photosynthesis with a single organism acting both as photocatalyst and processor, synthesizing and releasing high impact compounds.
