Dr. Dirksen received a Ph. D. in Pharmacology at the University of Rochester in 1992. After a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Kurt Beam at Colorado State University, he returned to the University of Rochester in 1998 as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and then Full Professor in 2009. The focus of the Dirksen laboratory is to elucidate the cellular mechanisms that control intracellular Ca2+ dynamics in skeletal and cardiac muscle, with a primary emphasis on L-type Ca2+ channels, store-operated Ca2+ entry channels, ryanodine receptors and mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake.
