Peter McIntyre

Peter McIntyre is a Professor of Pharmacology at RMIT University. He obtained his PhD in 1986 in Biochemistry from LaTrobe University and then did Postdoctoral work at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, Australia and the Imperial Cancer Research Institute in London, UK. He then moved to the Sandoz Institute for Medical Sciences at University College London, which later became the Novartis Institute for Medical Sciences. Here he helped discover the cold-sensitive TRP ion channels TRPM8 and TRPA1 as well as TRPV3 and he lead a program to develop antagonists to TRPV1 as analgesics. In 2005 he was appointed as Chairman and Head of the Department of Pharmacology, University of Melbourne, where he continued to work on TRP ion channels involved in pain sensation. In 2012, he moved to RMIT University and was appointed deputy director of the Health Innovations Research Institute. His current research is focused on understanding the molecular basis of GPCR- and mechanical stimulus-mediated transactivation of TRPV4 and using this knowledge to develop drugs to treat pain and cardiovascular disorders.
