Dr. Justin MacDonald is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Chair of the Smooth Muscle Research Group at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta at the University of Calgary (Calgary, AB, Canada). He is currently an Honorary Visiting Professor and Marie Curie International Incoming Fellow at Aston University (Birmingham, UK), as well as Canada Research Chair in Smooth Muscle Pathophysiology and Alberta Innovates Senior Scholar. His research is focused on the signal transduction pathways that regulate smooth muscle contraction in order to provide a detailed understanding of the molecular basis of contractile regulation, to identify abnormalities (dysfunctional proteins and signaling pathways) that lead to contractile pathologies and to develop therapeutic strategies to reverse abnormalities. In this regard, research in the MacDonald Lab has focused on the role of zipper-interacting protein kinase (ZIPK) in smooth muscle contraction, and his group has provided fundamental advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms that direct the functional signaling specificity and distinguish between physiological and pathological actions of ZIPK. His investigations have also revealed the potential for development of inhibitors of ZIPK for attenuation of cellular activity.
